DivX on PlayStation 3 - Yes, It's True

In the previous post I have talked about possible addition of DivX support to Xbox 360. But guess what? PlayStation 3 will be the first console to embrace DivX support.

PlayStation 3 is already a great device for multimedia playback. The console's Blue-ray reader can playback hi-definition video. However, DivX is the most popular format for homebrew and downloaded content.

So, this shall be a nice surprise to all PlayStation 3 owners and those considering buying the console.

PlayStation is is currently up for certification and should get the DivX support in the near future. Naturally, all new devices will ship with built-in DivX capability and the current PlayStation 3 owners will be able to upgrade firmware to get the feature. This also means that developers will be able to make use of the DivX encoding in their games.

A perfect co-operation I must say. So at least in something Sony did a great job.

DivX on Xbox 360? Can This Be True?

There is a speculation that the fall update of Xbox 360 will contain DivX support. Every rumour has a reason for existence. In this case, the reason was given by the CEO of DivX, Kevin Hell. He was asked by an analyst if the DivX support that was added to Microsoft's Media Extender would make eventually make its way to the Xbox 360 console. Hell's answer was positive. We can only speculate if his disclosing of the information was deliberate or a mistake. However, Hell quickly corrected himself by adding ... "that, uh, we’re in discussions with Microsoft on that at this point in time, so I can’t go into any great detail on that. Um that is not a certified, that is not a certified or licensed product at this time."

I guess more details will become clear in the nearest future. I believe sooner or later we'll see DivX on Xbox 360.
